Lima
is the travel destination number one in Peru. One of the main reasons
is that most of the tourists arrive at and also depart from the capital.
Actually only a few of them take their time to explore Lima. Lima with
its 8 million inhabitants is the heart of Peru. Here you find most of
the administration offices, all big companies have their representative
offices in Lima, so the city is the information center of Peru.
Lima still has many problems to solve: the continuous migration from
the countryside and the spreading poor housings at the outskirts of the
city, traffic problems and often the smoggy air. But Lima has also another
face: a beautiful historical city center, nice squares and a high number
of excellent museums.Beside the historical center of Lima the quarter
of Miraflores is one of the most interesting places of Lima. Here most
of the travelers stay during their visit in Lima, here the traveler find
plenty of shopping facilities, a lot of tourism companies like Peruline
have their offices here.
Miraflores
is situated on the steep coast of the Pacific Ocean and is known for its
parks, whereby the "Parque del Amor" is probably the most interesting.
Not far from the marvelous park the modern shopping center Larcomar is
located. Cafés, cinemas, restaurants and gift shops attract inhabitants
as well as foreigners. At night Larcomar with its discos and pubs is the
perfect place for revelers.
The "Ovalo Miraflores" is the heart of the urban district with
its famous Parque Kennedy, where artists sell their colorful products.
Cafes and restaurants invite visitors with a delicious range of products.
Only two blocks from Parque Kennedy the big Mercado Indio is situated,
where Peru-typical goods from the whole country are offered: textiles
of Alpaca, clothes, knit goods, ceramics, wooden and leather goods. Also
the historically interested traveler will be satisfied in Miraflores:
the Huaca Pucllana, a pyramid from the Lima culture and exhibits in the
small museum shows remains of the antique urban history. Take your time
for Lima and Miraflores and its many faces - it´s worth it!

Arequipa,
19 November 2004
1st day: The Colca Canyon, an enormous valley, which is larger than the Grand Canyon in the USA! That means wake up early (1 a.m.), transport with a local bus on an only partially paved road in 6 hours to Cabanaconde, a traditional village where the women still wear their typical costumes. Here is the starting point for the hikes into Peru's second deepest canyon. We are 6 hikers with two guias (travel guides). The first one, Fabricio from Cabanaconde, a man from the canyon, the other one, José, young and funny guy from Arequipa, will lead us. After a good breakfast we start the way down to the canyon ground, approximately 4 hours from 3400m to 2100m. Unbelievable, the colors, the nature and the steel-blue sky, everything is breathtaking and everything appears unreal! Our destination is a mini village in the ground of the sweep Colca River, with small pools. Everywhere are hot springs for the aching body -and it does well. During out relaxing in the hot water, our guides prepare a delicious meal: a strong soup and self-fished trout with rice and potatoes. There is no electricity in the Colca Canyon, so the hiker-woman goes early into bed, into a cozy cabin.
2nd
day: Up to an altitude of 2800m along the ravine. The effort and the altitude
make me a headache. Fortunately our guide has coca leaves. They do not
taste very well, but help against the altitude. We see big cacti and we
have plenty of breath-taking views into the Canyon. Then the descent,
down to 2100m, a hot pool awaits us, cabins, and magnificent palm trees
- an oasis with wonderful green plants. All this again without electric
light so at 6 p.m with sunset it gets dark. It doesn`t matter, we have
to sleep because tomorrow the ascent begins very early in the morning.
3rd
day: 2.30 a.m start into the dark, with flashlights and a little bit of
moon light up to 1200m. Sometimes the way is so steep that it reminds
me of stairs. O my god, the flashlight gets broken, fortunately another
group joins us and help us with a flashlight It´s even better no
to see where I walk along. Sometimes I hear only a eldritch noise when
I kick loose stones. Finally, all effort is awarded: a wonderful sunrise
in Cabanaconde, marvelous, we are relieved and enchanted. After the 4-hour
ascent I am happy about the delicious breakfast and a particular experience:
the majestic Condors in air of the fascinating Canyon. Impressing how
these giants slide apparently weightlessly. Last stop of the trip is Chivay.
The village has one of the most beautiful thermal baths of Peru, relaxing
vitalization for my feet combined with a spectacular panorama view. In
the evening we arrive again in Arequipa: and I really have fallen in love
with one of the most beautiful landscapes that I have ever seen!
