NEWSLETTER JULY 2005

Dear friend of Peru,

At the end of this month, Peru celebrates its independence day. Since 184 years now, the country is independent from Spain, its territorial extention is way younger though. Throughout a long period of time it was in territorial struggle with its Northern neighbouring state Ecuador. For us it seems to be interesting to ask: How about the relationship between the two Andean countries? It´s been a while since they seem to keep peace about territiorial issues. This month we have a look at a project, that amplifies their growing economical connections, while at the same time focuses on the old traditional routes of interaction between the people of this area. Our Top Topic illuminates the "Ruta del Spondylus". We also invite you to read the newsletter of our partner office in Quito in order to get to know more about Spondylus.

Into deep Northern Peruvian rainforest, but also back in time, we journey to Iquitos in our genre "From the Regions". We commermorate a short period of extraordinary wealth and economical success in this city: also known as Caoutchouk - boom. Whereaes in our travel notes, we have a look at the South, Anika Bader tells us about her trip to Ballestas Islands. Our partners inform you this month most of all about improvements and new tour program options, they provide you with.

Enjoy reading!

Peru's road to Ecuador - The Route of the Spondylus

musician Hundreds of years ago, people from the two Andean countries Peru and Ecuador were connected by brisk trade.
After both countries declared their independence from Spain, repeatingly they went through armed conflicts and territorial disagreements. Since 1998, things have become quiet and peaceful and even economy-wise their relations seem to stabilize.
Now a new major project in tourism, the "Ruta del Spondylus", gives this positive development its name.
Along the coastline, 6 ecuadorian departments and on the Peruvian territory Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, Libertad, Cajamarca and Lima are involved in claiming the old trade-road for more than 250 000 tourists expected from all over the world.

This project owns its name from a famous export trade on the continent, which was in times, even before the Inca explored the continent, an important material for producing ceremonial goods.
Spondylus or "Mullu", how this molusc, a sort of oyster, was called in prehespanic times, gained its importance, following archaeological research, exclusively beeing used in production of objects for ceremonies and jewelry. So no wonder that it´s among the earliest luxury goods.
Down to Pachacamac in Lima Incas "red Gold" was widely spread, and though researchers may argue whether it has reached Lima by sea or by land, thus, it is a symbol for the high standard of business relationship between these old Andean cultures.

"Ruta del Spondylus" is a consolidation of this economic connection between the two Andean countries, Ecuador and Peru, and once again: It´s based on one of the most important products of these regions: Tourism.
This recently presented initative with a duration of five years hopes to strengthen economically less developed districts in this region and by advancing the infrastructure make tourism in the North of Peru and on the South Coast of Ecuador more popular.

To find out more about the actual concerns of this project, you may have a look at ecuadorline.com.

 AT A GLANCE

Machu Picchu/ Sacred Valley: Two plans to advance tourism

Machu Picchu Peruvian government is headed for two new measures. Both of them are concerned with Peru's main touristic targets, the Sacred Valley of the Incas on the one and Machu Picchu on the other hand.

Besides the preservation of Machu Picchu, which is one of the country's most important archaelogical sights, also more measures to protect the environment shall be taken, more adjustments shall regulate visitors' transfer and infrastructural deficits in the surrounding communities shall be eliminated.
For Machu Picchu, the highlight is going to be a new museum, which also is going to expose some objects, whose present habitation is in Yale University. This museum is also concerned with giving its visitors unterstanding of Andean culture. By intensifying their knowledge of Machu Picchu's cultural importance it shall, at the same time, call their attention to paying it some more respect.

Another Measure of the Peruvian government is to explore infrastructure in the Sacred Valley. Besides more attention on services for its visitors, also local inhabitants shall be sensitized for matters of tourism. Water- and wastewater facilities in Sacred Valley, as well as tarmac roads are basic conditions for achieving this goal.
Archaelogical sites will be catalogued and the museum structures are going to be advanced. Part of the better attention to its visitors are new washing rooms and toilets, but also a better signposting will help to orientate in this amazing valley.

Blanca Varela introduces her new book

Blanca VarelaBlanca Varela, one of the most important voices of contemporary literature in Peru, introduced her new book to the audience at the nacional Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology last month. "El libro del barro y otros poemas", how her new anthology is called, was presented to an exclusive audience on June the 22nd, and though 1927 born Blanca Varela may have calmed a little in her verses, still, her new work keeps this special "melody". Since her studying period at San Marcos University in Lima hardly any sentimentality is found in her poems, particulary the precision and clarity of her words characterize this idol for lots of Peruvian writers.

Also her new opus keeps the weight of tradition up: From Breton and French surrealism to existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre or Simone de Beauvoir, her words are breathing out of tradition, formulated in her very own melody. After lively periods as a student or as well in her thierties and fourties, now silence is breaking into her life. But still stays this melody. At this introduction of her new book, some of the speakers spoke of Blanca Varela as one of the most important poets all over Peru, if not all over Southern America, and deservedly so.

RAINFOREST: Iquitos and the tears of the treIquitoses

Iquitos is located in the Northeast of Peru, it´s a modern city, which has grown to be a prospering metropolis for its oil production, but also is known as an important base of tourism.
The city shows some magnificent buildings, and as lively as its streets today, it has also lived a moved history, particulary during a period which is called "boom de caucho", chautchouc-boom, for which it was one of the main market places. It was also due to natural rubber that Peru's Northern rainforest gained such wealth in early days. Between 1870 and 1880 all over Southamerica caoutrainforest treechouc exportation boomed.
Iquitos with its riverport developed to a main trading point. No wonder that even today lots of interesting objects can be found in this city: Aselm de Águila, for example, one of those men who gained wealth with trading and who were called Caoutchouc barons, ordered to rebuilt a house designed by Gustave Eiffel for the world exposicion in 1887, in Iquitos. It was brought to the city in pieces by boat.

But Caucho, a derrivation of Cau=Tree and Ochu= Tear, how this material was called by the natives, allowed this city only a short time on stage: When a British finally succeded in smuggelling cautchouc seeds to Europe, main plantations moved to Southeast Asia and after 30 years of prosperity - sure enough only for few people - Perus rainforest sank into oblivion again.
Today tourism in the city of Iquitos is growing rapidly because of its perfect positioning to start tours through the rainforest.

 TRAVEL NOTES

Birds whispering with the waves: Islas Ballestas

birdsLate in the evening we arrive at a crossroad of Panamericana Sur. That is where the bus we travelled with for like 4 hours drops us off. Just a little sign mentions "Pisco"- where we will stay over nigh t- and as soon as we get all our luggage ready, a group of cab drivers surrounds us. We take a cab to Plaza de Armas, where our hostal is situated. Little to say about Pisco, nothing extraordinary, just one of those cities in the desert. Only its name might be meaningful for some Peru fancier. Pisco is how Peru´s national drink is called.

But anyway- Pisco isn´t the destination we are headed for, we just stop there to visit Islas Ballestas on the next day. To get there, you have to go by bCandelabro in Paracasoat at 8 or 10 o´ clock a.m.
So bravely we get up the next morning at half past seven. The last night, we had good luck to meet our guide for the next day at the Plaza de Armas, so that, now that people already know us, we have a special "Get up-room service" - without being ordered they knock on our door: It´s time to go. But all this German effort just wasn´t worth worrying about. We are in Peru and not the only ones arriving late. Until all passengers have finally boarded our bus another hour passes by.

We follow the coastline and reach the port where our tourboat starts. It´s just a spot in the desert, bordered by some restaurants. We go on board and start our journey way far from the caost. We get deeper and deeper into the waves. Islas Ballestas are situated about 40 minutes by boat away from the coast and while driving, the cool breeze we feel in our faces is waking us up - and this time for sure. Even before reaching the islands, we start to encounter birds who dive into the ocean on their search for food.

pinguinsAt the islands, the tour starts with "Candelabro", a huge trident, which is painted into the sand and seems to belong to the Nazca-lines not far away. Meanwhile sounds around us get louder and the air is filled with this typical smell inbetween ocean and life. Around us more and more birds appear, as we finally reach the islands. On their edges that plunge down into the sea a diffusion of colors catches our attention. They are over and over crowded by birds in different colors, who bathe in the sun. Our guide explains different species to us and we are all fascinated by the three Humboldt pinguins he shows to us. But even more fascinating are the see lions, laying on little coves and bathing in grots under the island.

After two hours we head back to the mainland and on this direction uncountable sounds of birds, calls of seals and splashing waves accompany us.
