Amazon River Cruises on the "Delfin I" and "Delfin II"

The river cruise ships “Delfin I” and “Delfin II” are real eye-catchers with their gentle wooden design and sophisticated decoration in the manifold and vivid Amazon rainforest. Behind the curtain, the cruise liners also convince by a broad range of amenities which invite every guest to relax and enjoy the stay on board.
The small but nice “Delfin I” disposes of a carrying capacity of 12 passengers who are accommodated in six comfortable double cabins with river-side windows. All rooms are equipped with an own bathroom and a soundless air conditioner. In the dining hall, you can taste the excellent local cuisine and in the bar, you may try a Peruvian cocktail and drink creations from the rainforest. On the upper deck of the cruise, you will find a saloon where you are free to have a seat on one of the cosy couches while relaxing in the light breeze of the Amazon and gazing at the beautiful and diverse flora and fauna of natural reserve.
In April 2009, the “Delfin II” had its maiden trip, representing a top-class cruise ship. With its 14 suites deluxe, amongst others four luxurious master suites with 180° panorama windows and four suites which can be interconnected with each other, the cruise liner is especially attractive for families. The second floor consists of an observation deck with a bar and a library and represents the perfect place to meet, chat and exchange the newest adventures. On the upper deck, you can lay in a hammock, listening to the nocturnal sounds of the jungle, observing fire flies and letting yourself lull to dream.

Duration: 5 days / 4 nights
Day 1: Board the DELFIN in Nauta
Arrival Iquitos. You will be picked up by guides and transported by bus for about one and a half hour towards Nauta, where you will board the DELFIN. Our experienced crew will help you settle into your wood-paneled, comfortable twin-bedded cabin. Just before dusk, as the DELFIN starts its journey into the rainforest, our barman and staff will provide you with a wide variety of drinks and cocktails, like the Pisco Sour on the base of Peruvian grape brandy. Fine regional cigars will also be available. Dinner is served in our cozy dining room located at the back of the ship’s second deck. Aside from providing you with your first rainforest adventure, the DELFIN is also a unique culinary experience, offering the best of Amazonian-Peruvian cuisine. Our chef prides himself in serving dishes in different styles and seasoned with a wide variety of herbs and spices, as well as exotic fruits. Later, our guides will use charts and short videos displayed on our flat LCD screen to give a brief orientation, outlining details of your journey and the wildlife you will see in the Amazon watershed.

Day 2: Belluda Caño, Dorado River
Dawn and dusk are ideal times for nature observation, and an early rise is therefore highly recommended. On your first morning, coffee will wake you up at 6.00 am and you can choose from a wide breakfast buffet. During the Rainy Season (December - May) you will explore the black water stream Belluda. Aboard the skiffs, you start learning more about the rainforest in the Pacaya Samiria Nature Reserve, where you will have the chance to see its amazing wildlife. You can easily spot parrots, macaws and monkeys. Dry Season (June - November). During the dry season, you can visit two different kinds of ecosystems: flooded forest and terra firm forest. After disembarking at a native village, you will start a hike. This walk offers excellent opportunities for spotting birds such as the snail kite, black tailed ant bird amongst others. After one hour you will reach a lovely lagoon where two dugout canoes await you in the midst of one of the most remote, least visited areas in the world. This lagoon is filled with endangered and unique fresh water fish, such as the paiche, the largest in the Amazon basin which can weigh more than 80 kg (170 lb). After dinner, you will head for the spectacular Dorado River within the Pacaya Samiria Reserve where you will also experience an unforgettable encounter with gray and pink river dolphins. Enjoy a unique opportunity to swim with the dolphins. Our bar is open and awaits you to serve you new combinations of regional fruits and drinks while you relax aboard the DELFIN as we continue our journey up the Ucayali River towards the Puinahua River.

Day 3: Atun Poza Lake, Rio Pacaya
The staff is waiting for you with fresh ground coffee, grown in the highlands of the Amazon and a delicious breakfast. Rainy Season (December - May): This morning you will cruise in skiffs along the Atun Poza Lake where you will find several species of egrets, herons, hawks, long legged neotropical cormorants fishing for their dinner and unusual and loud horned screamers. You will also have an excellent opportunity of seeing social spiders and how their webs embrace huge parts of a tree. During the Dry Season (June - November) you will hike at Atun Poza Lake through this pristine and unique ecosystem, passing through a classic tropical rainforest with emergent trees and canopy trees reaching up to 55 meters in height. Biologically, this kind of forest is probably one of the richest habitats on earth, supporting the most species of plants and animals per unit area. The target is the giant ceiba or kapok tree with its large diameter. After a delicious lunch, you have reached the main goal, the Pacaya River, at the very heart of the Pacaya Samiria Nature Reserve, Peru’s largest protected area and one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit. At sunset, you will be astonished by the beautiful colors of the sky and by hearing the jungle symphony. Armed with powerful spot lights, you will start your night safari in search of night herons, pauraques, spectacled owls, up to a dozen species of croaking from the river’s edge while fire flies light up the jungle around you.

Day 4: Caro Curahuayte Lagoon, Yanallpa Community
Breakfast on board of the DELFIN. Rainy Season (December - May): You go fishing at Caro Curahuayte Lake. On board the skiffs, you will head for a beautiful lake where to expect to catch some fish like the black, white and red bellied piranha. In the Dry Season (June - November) you search for the shore-birds. When the river is very low, broad white sandy beaches emerge and create a special ecosystem that harbors sandpipers that hover and dive to catch fish, and many others. This afternoon, you will have the opportunity to visit the riverside community Yanallpa, this will be your first interaction with local villagers and you can meet their unique way of life. You will learn more about all fruit trees and how they harvest them. In the evening, the guides will review all you have seen, with the help of videos and a slide show on our flat-screen TV. You will sail all night long as the DELFIN continues its smooth journey downstream.

Day 5: Amazon River, Yarapa River, Puerto Miguel Community
On board the skiffs, you will stop at the village of Puerto Miguel to meet local villagers. You will have the chance to learn more about their culture, traditions and folklore. You may also visit one of the villager’s homes, to see how they live and the simplicity of their lifestyle as well as purchase some of the handcrafts they make. After that, you explore the Yarapa River and its magnificent wildlife. Back on board, the journey continues and the boat is heading toward Nauta. After checking out and disembarking, an air-conditioned bus will take you back to Iquitos.

General Information: The weather in Iquitos is warm and humid with average annual temperature between 21 °C (70 °F) and 33 °C (95 °F). The dry season is from May to November and the wet season is from December to April.
Important: The seasons feature differences in the plant and animal life as well as in climate. All activities are subject to change due to weather conditions and time of year. River and tributary levels may vary and thus navigation times and excursions may need to be modified at the captain’s discretion. Bring comfortable soft-soled shoes, light-weight trousers and long-sleeved tops, hat, sun glasses, lightweight rain gear, sunscreen, mosquito repellant, bonoculares, camera and spare batteries.

Breakfast - cold, fresh fruit juice, fresh fruit and light sandwiches with coffee and tea - will be served as you float amidst a favored dolphin feeding spot. During the Rainy Season (December - May) you will cruise in skiffs along the Atun Poza Lake where you will find several species of egrets, herons, hawks, long legged neotropical cormorants fishing for their dinner and unusual and loud horned screamers. You will also have an excellent opportunity of seeing social spiders and how their webs embrace huge parts of a tree. During the Dry Season (June - November) you will hike at Atun Poza Lake through this pristine and unique ecosystem, passing through a classic tropical rainforest with emergent trees and canopy trees reaching up to 55 meters in height. Biologically, this kind of forest is probably one of the richest habitats on earth, supporting the most species of plants and animals per unit area. Our target is the giant kapok tree with its large diameter. Leaving behind the wildlife, our chef and kitchen staff will treat you to a farewell dinner, including fresh salads, grilled vegetables, magical sauces, and wonderful combinations of different types of meat. Our talented staff will delight you with some live music before you retire.

Day 4: Amazon, Yarapa River, Puerto Miguel Community
The smell of fresh ground toasted coffee will be the wakeup call this morning and as usual you will continue enjoying all the different types of local fresh fruit for a good start to the morning. On board our skiffs we will stop at the village of Puerto Miguel to meet local villagers. You will have the chance to learn about their culture, traditions and folklore. You may also visit one of the villager’s homes, to see how they live and the simplicity of their lifestyle and purchase some of the handcrafts they make. After that we explore the Yarapa River and its magnificent wildlife. Back on board the journey continues and you sail downstream to the confluence of the Ucayali and the Marañon, birthplace of the Amazon river. Dolphins delight in this special setting. After checking out and disembarking in Nauta, an air-conditioned bus will take you to Iquitos
