Duration: 11 days/ 10 nights
Grade: medium

Special in July: Inti
Raymi Festival
Our Mini Huayhuash trek is a special trek for people who do have
not sufficient time to trek the complete circuit of 12 to 15 days.
We have designed the trekking route to include the most breathtaking
parts of the Cordillera Huayhuash with campsites by the most beautiful
lakes and with impressive views of the largest mountains in the
range - including the second highest peak in Peru Yerupaja, the
famous Siula Grande and many more.
The trek features a visit to the substantial Inca ruins at Huanuco
Viejo.
Day 1: Bus from Lima to Huaraz (3090m).
Day 2 & 3: Huaraz acclimatisation days. We can organise
day hikes to help with acclimatisation.
Day 4: Drive in our private bus for approximately 6 hours
from Huaraz to Huanuco Pampa 3736m. We set up camp near the Inca
Ruins of Huanuco Viejo Ruins and spend the afternoon visiting the
ruins.
Day 5: Drive for 3 to 4 hours from Huanuco Viejo passing
through the the Santa Rosa Jesus Baños village and on to
Queropalca village at 3800m. In Queropalca we meet our donkey drivers
and donkeys and start the trekking with a relaxing 3 hour walk up
to the lake Laguna Carhuacocha 4200m. From the camp we have astonishing
views directly at the head of the lake of the mountains Yerupaja,
Jirishanca and Siula Grande.
Day 6: We stay another night at Carhuacocha to enjoy the
mountain surroundings. We take a day hike up close to the base of
Yerupaja and Siula Grande where there are 3 high mountain glacial
lakes. The lakes are unique in that each is a different colour of
blue or green. Sometimes we see avalanches coming off the glaciers
into the lakes. In the afternoon or evening - try fishing for trout!!
Day 7: A steady climb up on a good path to cross our first
pass Paso de Carhuac (4650m) and then descend to our next camp at
another large trout filled lake - Laguna Mitucocha (4250m) 6 to
7 hours. From our camp we have close views of the huge peaks Ronday,
Jirishanca, Ninashanca.
Day 8: In the morning we cross the pass Punta Cacanan (4700m)
and descend to the valley Quebrada Cuncush with wide expanses of
rolling grassy hills, passing through Quartelhuain and Matacanca
before turning into the Rondoy Valley to camp (4350m). 6 hours of
hiking.
Day 9: A fairly steep path up to the Rondoy Pass (4750m)
from where we have yet more amazing views of the surrounding peaks.
The descent from the pass is past the lake Solteracocha and then
we walk beside beautiful Laguna Jahuacocha to our camp at the head
of the lake (4150m). A harder day - the trek lasts 7 hours.
Day 10: Rest day at Laguna Jahuacocha. Visit the local farmhouse
just behind our camp where you can buy a beer to go with your trout
!! We can take a day hike up Cerro Amarillo +/- 5000m from where
we have views across the Huayhuash range and also down towards the
Quebrada Cuncush.
Day 11: An early start. We leave early, starting with a
gradual climb to our final pass Pampa Llamac (4300m) from where
we have our final views of the Huayhuash
range. Then it is a long descent back to Llamac. 5 ½ hours.
In Llamac the bus will be waiting to take us back to Huaraz for
hot showers!

IN JULY: INTI RAYMI FESTIVAL |
In July we will have a special trek to co-incide with the exciting
and colourful Inti Raymi Indian festival held at Huanuco Viejo.
We will stay one day extra there so that we can enjoy the atmosphere
and excitement of the festival.
The festival is celebrated each year on 27 July, and involves some
600 actors and actresses dressed in traditional indian clothing.
The Inti Raymi was the most important festival in the Inca empire
to worship the Sun God, the Source of life. Thanks are given for
the year's harvest and prayers made for good weather and harvests
for the coming year. The festival starts the arrival at the main
ruin of Ushno of the principal Inca and groups representing the
4 different Inca sectors dressed in distinctive clothing from their
sector. Acllas or virgin women spread flowers before the Inca as
he makes his way to the main balcony accompanied by the guests dressed
in traditional costumes decorated with gold and singing spiritual
rituals and worshipping.
