EASTER IN PERU
Festival of the crosses in Porcón: festivities of profund, religious devoutness Porcón is situated in the northern Highlands of Peru, in the department of Cajamarca, at an altitude of 3,000 to 3,800 m and about 20 km from the highway to Bambamarca. This community consists of small rural groups which are spread over the green fields and whose inhabitants originally belong to the Cañan people. Here, the local people celebrate the Palm Sunday with deep devotion, the beginning of Holy Week, with the entering of Jesus Christ to Jerusalem: his up to 3 m tall portrait which is decorated with mirrors, palms and flowers, is lead through the community during a procession. Four different ceremonies are part of these celebrations: the coronation of the crosses, the reception of the Lord in the curator's house (which is in charge of managing the festivities), the different responses, chanted in Quechua and Latin, and finally the procession to the manor's chapel. This procession is followed by more than 50 crosses, each of them
weighing about 60 kg. These crosses are carried by the believers
with deep, religious piety.
