EASTER IN PERU

Easter in IQUITOS

Delicious dishes and angry mothers-in-law

The hot city of Iquitos at the shores of the mighty Amazon river prepaes to receive Holy Week between April 13 and April 16. Like every year, many traditions will repeat in this part of the Amazon rainforest, especially when it comes to food: during this week the "Juane de Yuca" is prepared whose main ingredient is the Yuca corm, a vegetable that is cultivated in every little manor. This traditional dish is eaten on Good Friday instead of chicken or meat because the catholic Church proscribes eating meat on this day.

Some special costum which nowadays is only practiced in the rural area, takes place onThursday: the mothers-in-law indemnify their daughters- and sons-in-law: they give them a "simbolic whiplash" which should make them confess their sins and participate in the processions.

On Holy Saturday, the citizens of Iquitos spend their time at one the numerous celebrations - some of them still practice the costum to dance to the sound of the Bombo dance and the traditional rythms of the Changanacuy and the Chimaychi.

Our recommendation for Iquitos:
