DESTINATIONS IN PERU
Here you can find a description of the different regions in Peru:
COAST
General information - Regions
A stony desert landscape lies beneath each side of the famous Panamericana
motorway, which connects the entire American continent from North
to South. Only a few valleys with any vegetation are situated along
the 2400 km long way through Peru. Virtually the whole length of
Peru´s coast is desert. In this terrain with wide beaches,
admirable cities and legendary historical sites you will find many
extraordinary tourist sites.
Location
Starting at the Ecuadorian border in the North, the coast strip
runs down for 2000 km until it reaches Chile in the South. The beach
is relatively narrow in the South whereas in the North it reaches
as broad as 150 km.
The coast alltogether makes up 11% of Peru's territory. It consists
of vast deserts with earth formations and rough stones. Far from
the river valleys in the deserted sandy areas you will only find
lonely bushes. Three of Peru's biggest cities Lima (9,242,000 inhabitants),
Trujillo (765,200 inhabitants) and Chiclayo (634,600 inhabitants)
are situated on the coast. Some of the most important tourist
destinations such as the National Park Paracas, the fortress Chan
Chan (Trujillo) and Lord of Sipan's grave in Lambayeque (Chiclayo)
are located in this unique area.
Climate
Due to the cold Humboldt current and the high rising Andes in the
East, Peru's coast is a long, vast desert where it seldom rains.
In the central and Southern parts of the coast it is winter from
April to November and the summer season lasts from December till
March.
In the area around Lima the sky is mainly gray in winter due to
the cold Humbolt current meeting the warm Andean air. This forms
a light drizzle rain/fog, the so-called ´Garúa´
and is a constant daily aspect of life in Lima from April through
to November.
During the summer months the Garua lifts and Lima changes appearance and atmosphere due to the influx of light, there is often blue sky and temperatures rise to comforttable
28° C.
The Northern coast is not as affected by the cold water currents, leaving the region to enjoy up to 300 warm sunny days per year. At the boarder
to Ecuador temperatures up to 35° C at the height of summer season.
Best time to travel
In the winter season from April until November Lima is affected
by the cold Humboldt current that cools down the warm air and creates
the Garúa. The best time to travel is probably the European
winter, e.g. December through to April.
