RAINFOREST

General information - Regions and reserves

GENARAL INFORMATION

Location
Three fifths of Peru's territory is covered with rainforest (called selva). The specific circumstances in this climate zone create a flora and fauna that is unique in the world. The Amazonas area is dense with vegetation and very humid.
Although covering the greatest portion of Peruvian territories, this region is very sparsely populated, with only 2 inhabitants per sq km. It is also the least known region, with flooded areas covering significant portions of this territory. A great number of these areas are ancient riverbeds, long forgotten by the great Amazon River. It is the perfectly immaculate rainforest and the incomparable diversity of wildlife, which make the Peruvian Selva a paradise for any nature lover.

Climate
Due to the great heat and the high humidity the tropical rainforest is home to an impressive diversity of fauna and a rich vegetation. Temperatures can rise up to over 34 °C - perfect conditions for plants to grow and for species to develop. Two different seasons can be distinguished: the rainy season takes place from December till March whereas from May till November the dry season dominates.

Best time to travel
The recommended time to travel is the dry season since heavy rain showers during the rainy period are a daily aspect. As the Peruvian rainforest covers a wide territory and different altitudes, it is highly recommended to inform yourself thoroughly about the region that you desire to travel to in advance.
