Capital of the province of Amazonas
The town Chachapoyas lies in the North Eastern parts of the Andes.
It was founded by Alonso de Alvarado in 1538 and became the most
important city in the North East of Peru during the time of colonialisation.
In the centre of this tranquil city the visitor will find grand
colonial houses with tiled roofs, gorgeous courtyards surrounded
by gardens and the typical balconies which reflect the Spanish influence.
Chachapoyas is a perfect starting point for excursions to attractions in the locality.
The mystic region offers a variety of archeological excavation sites
with spectacular findings, such as the mystic sarcophague
of Karajía for example, which is still relatively unknown.
The region lies about 300 km North of Cajamarca in the Amazonian
zone of Peru and was reigned by a pre-Inca tribe dating to around 800
AD. The Inca called the Chachapoya, the inscrutable, white skinned
tribe of the Northern foggy woods "Men of the clouds".
Scientists are still baffled by this culture, as hardly anything was written about them by the Spanish and this attracts many archaeologists
to the place. The Chachapoya had a fully developed military
system, although in spite of this they were nevertheless supressed by
the Inca Tupac Yupanqui and destroyed in the 15th century. The powerful fortress Kueláp
situated on top of a hill is the most important sight in the region
and shows a superb example of the tremendous construction skills
of this tribe. Moreover the fascinating landscape entices visitors to engage in many spledid
trekking tours through the deep, green valleys and jungle forrest.
