map
The capital of the department Junín is a lively commercial
and tourism centre in the middle of the calm mountain ranges of
the Andes.
In Huancayo, everybody is proud of the rich cultural heritage and
traditions that are still being upheld. For centuries, the Valle
de Manora was home of the Huanca, a culture that was always opposed
to the Inca. Even nowadays many locals refer to the Huanca when
being asked about their roots.
Furthermore Huancayo has rich culinary offers for its guests. Papa
a la Huancaína (traditional meal of potatoes with a tasty
sauce) is only one of the many delicacies that have their origin
in Huancayo and later found their way all over Peru.
The quarters of Tambo and San Jerónimo are famous for their
ceramics.

Plaza de la Constitución
Huancayo is one of the few South Amercian towns whose main square
is not called Plaza de Armas. Here it is the Plaza de la Constitución
that marks the centre of the city. Years before the official declaration
of independence the liberal constitution of Cádiz was confirmed
here. The friendly atmosphere of the Plaza is also due to the numerous
plants that are typical of this area.
Parque de la Identidad Hunaca
Five minutes from the city centre lies the Parque de la Identidad
Hunaca. On more than 5800 sq. metres, this lovely green oasis is situated
in the quarter of San Antonia. On broad meadows artistic works of
marble as well as quartz crystal and soapstone can be admired.
Capilla La Merced
The National Insitute for Culture declared this chapel Monumento
Histórico (historical monument) as the constitution of 1839
was signed here.
Cathedral of Huancayo
In 1955 the Cathedral of Huancayo was declared a cathedral. The
neo-classic building is situated on the Plaza de la Constitución
and home to numerous paintings of the famous school of Cusco.
Feria de Jaurí
There is always something going on on the Feria de Jaurí.
Visiting this typical market is definitely worth the time. This is where locals do their shopping or enjoy themselves
at one of the cock fights that traditionally take place here.
